8 Bible Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 13: 1
In the Thessalonian church, all the three things-Faith,Hope & Charity -mentioned in 1 Cor.13:13 were found. Is it not?
“Remembering without ceasing
your work of FAITH,and
labour of LOVE,and
patience of HOPE,
in our Lord Jesus Christ,in the sight of God and our Father.1 Thes.1:3.
Compare it with Rev.2:2.
There may be
Works without FAITH,
Labour without LOVE &
Patience without HOPE.
“And now abideth,faith,hope,charity,these three;but the greatest of these is charity.”1 Cor.13:13.Read Matt.22:34-40.
Rev.2:2.:”I know thy works, and thy labour and thy patience…”.But the Ephesian Church has left the first love.
The main point of Paul was that exercising spiritual gifts without charity–supreme,Christ like, self giving and unconditional “agape” love-was useless, unprofitable and of no value.
“Though I speak…”
He speaks hypothetically - Not “even though” but “Even (if)” I spoke with the tongues of (all) men…” He spoke with the tongue of a man, but not with the tongues of all men.
“…tongues…of angels…”
I think charismatics apply this phrase to their special ‘gift.’ But again, in context, he is speaking hypothetically. If Paul is not using a “for instance” approach in forming this argument, then, to be consistent, you would have to believe that Paul knew “everything” in vs. 2. But Paul wasn’t saying he knew everything, even if he did, he wouldn’t brag about it. He was saying, no matter how much he had, he was completely worthless and even annoying (tinkling cymbal) without ‘charity.’
What language do angels speak anyway- according to every account in the Bible?
“Charity”
Does not mean “love.” Charity means “love in action.”

1)In 1 Cor.12,Paul describes the variety of spiritual gifts bestowed upon the church which has to maintain unity among its members caring for one another without divisions although there is not uniformity. In 1 Cor.13,he contrasts the Supreme Love against the spiritual gifts. In 1 Cor.14,he describes how to exercise the spiritual gifts to maintain order in the Church. In the opening verses of 1 Cor.15,Paul mentions about the “Preaching of the Gospel”.
2)The preaching of the gospel must be the important agenda of the Church.
Matt.28:19,20;Mark 16:15;Luke 24:47;Acts 1:8.What is the purpose or motive in doing the ministry to our Lord Jesus Christ?Do we do it with the intention of exhibiting our talents or displaying our gifts or showing the depth of our Biblical knowledge?Do we seek popularity or honour from men? What is the motivation force of doing ministry to our lord Jesus Christ?
3)What was Apostle Paul’s ambition? To preach the gospel where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been planted by someone else.Read Rom.15:20.
4)”For as it is written,As I have saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,and every tongue shall confess to God.So then everyone of us shall give account of himself to God.”Rom.14:11,12.Read Isaiah 45:23.”That at the name
of Jesus every knee should bow,of things in the earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Christ is LORD to the glory of God the Father.”Phil.2:10,11.
5)Love was be the motivation force for the preaching of the gospel in Paul.
2 Cor.5:14.”For the love of God constrains me.” What is motivating us to preach the gospel to others?Do our words & actions express our love for God and fellow men?
6)The Ephesian Church has the “labour”? Rev.2:2.But the charge against that Church was that it had left its “First Love”.Rev.2:4.Paul has appreciated the “labour of love” in the Thessalonian church.1 Thes.1:3.
7)There will be reward for our labour of love in eternity.Heb.6:10.”For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name,in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”
Rev.22:12.”And,behold,I come quickly;and my reward is with me,to give every man according to his work shall be.”Paul closes 1 Cor.15 with these encouraging words.”Therefore,my beloved brethren,be ye steadfast, unmovable,
always abounding in the work of the lord, for as much as ye know that your labour is not vain in the Lord.”1 Cor.15:58.
What is the source of LOVE?Read Romans 5:5
I prefer to believe the term “tongues of men and of angels” is a reference to eloquence.

1)Paul closes 1 Cor.12 with the statement,”Yet I shew unto you a more excellent way.” This is the way of love.He describes it in 1 Cor.13.
2)There are four Greek words for “love”. (i)Storge (affection) (ii)Philia
(friendship) (iii)Eros (includes sexual love) (iv)Agape(Christian love).
3)The word “agape” is used in 1 Cor.4:21;8:1;13:1,2,3,4,8,13;14:1;16:14,24.
4)”Agape” is an unconditional love.It is supreme love.It shows love even though the object of love has unlovable qualities.
5)Brass has been used to make fetters,mirrors,city gates,musical instruments and later times coins.(Ex.38:8;2 kings 25:7,13;Isaiah 45:2;
Matt.10:9;1 Cor.13:1;Rev.9:20).Cymbol is used as a musical instrument.(2 Sam.6:5;1 Chr.16:5;1 Cor.13:1)Paul has used the images of sounding brass & tinkling cymbol. They were the elements used in pagan worship by the Corinthians before they were saved.
6)It should be noted that Paul is not against using spiritual gifts. He stresses that exercising the spiritual gifts without love is useless.Paul uses the phrase “love without charity”in the first three verses of 1 Cor.13.
Love is contrasted with spiritual gifts.
7)Paul mentions first “the tongues of men and of angels”.The gift of speaking in tongues is No.1 agenda here.”Tongues of men” may mean foreign languages.Paul knew Hebrew,Aramaic & Greek.”Tongues of angels” may mean the speech that is unknown to men.Paul does not give indication that spiritual gifts will be retarded in this verse but stressed that they must be exercised with love.
Speaking In Tongues Is Spiritually Retarded

Think about it, there must be higher love
Down in the heart and in the stars above,
Without it, life is wasted time.
Look inside your heart, I’ll look inside mine
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what’s fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be.
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love,
Bring me a higher love
Where’s this higher love, I’ve been thinking of?
Worlds are turning and we’re just hanging on
Facing our fear, standing out there alone
Oh A yearning, and it’s real for me
There must be someone who’s feeling for me
Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what’s fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love,
Bring me a higher love
Where’s this higher love, I’ve been thinking of?
I will wait for it, I’m not too late for it
Until then, I’ll sing my song
To cheer the night along
I could light the night up with my soul on fire
I could make the sun shine from pure desire
Let me feel the love come over me
Let me feel how strong it can be
Bring me a higher love
Bring me a higher love, oh
Bring me a higher love
I could rise above for this higher love.
