Paul is trying to teach the doctrine of the resurrection for all (1 Cor 15:20-24) and basically saying to the recipients of his letter: If there is no resurrection or if this life is all there is and if there is nothing after death then why bother with the practice of being baptized on behalf of the dead.
He already had explained that there is indeed a resurrection and an after life, so therefore the proxy baptism practice isn’t a pointless exercise.
