As Shepherd, he saves not only by giving his life for the sheep, but also by guiding the sheep and watching over them, directing them in the right path. Even as David says in Psalms 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” That is, although he is in a deadly place, he will not fear, because the rod of God’s correction and the staff of his teaching will prevent David from straying into danger.
