Benhadad knew that in the Old Testament, you don’t visit a man of God empty-handed. What he told is servant was that he should take along with him a prophet’s offering for the prophet. The sustenance of the prophet is dependent on the gift he receives from people.The Levite’s inheritance were with the other tribes.The verse reveals that anything could be given.The precious things of Damascus were brought to the prophet.

Saul answered him by saying,”But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of god : what have we?” (!Samuel 9:7. Naaman, the Syrian commander had gone to see Elisha with presents of silver and garments.(2 Kings 5;23. So it was customary to bring some gifts to a man of God when one goes to see him.
