Paul was the servant of God. It was because of him that the lives of the others on the ship were saved. But he is also the servant of men, being all things to all. so while others are just taking the benefit of the fire in that cold season, Paul takes extra care to keep the fire burning. So he gathered a bundle of sticks to put on the fire. It was already burning and was required to keep burning. Had Paul not done that he would not have suffered the bite of the viper. Local people could not have come to know that here had been the servant of the living God and there would have been no opening there for the gospel to preach. When people saw that Paul had remained unaffected even after the bite of the viper, they were then prepared to hear Paul. That way God also provided for the needs of those saved from the ship wreckage on that island where they did not know any local person to get help.
