One Bible Commentary on Daniel 1: 20

1

1. Since astrological diviners and enchanters are mentioned
a. Some have wondered if Daniel
b. And his companions practiced
c. The magical arts
2. But if these men would NOT
a. Eat things offered to idols
3. They assuredly would ALSO refuse
a. To partake in magical endeavors
b. Which are good guesses of men at best
c. And demonic in origin at worst
4. The Torah strictly forbade involvement in magic
a. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you (Deut
18:10-12)
5. This verse merely states that Daniel and his companions
a. Were far MORE knowledgeable and prudent
b. Than the magicians, sorcerers,
c. Sages and hacks of the kingdom
6. It is God who gave DAVID understanding and wisdom
a. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts (Ps 119:98-100)
7. It is God who made SOLOMON wiser than all those around him
a. And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men–than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations (1 Kings 4:29-31)
8. And it is God who will also give US wisdom
a. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him (James 1:5)
