But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

1. Daniel and his friends REFUSED the king‘s menu
a. The food was probably NOT Kosher
b. Perhaps included pork and horse
c. And the food and wine
d. Were probably offered to idols
2. Changing their names and training them
a. In Babylonian culture was fine
b. Because they knew who they were
c. As Israelites who STILL served God
3. But to have them religiously
a. And ceremonially DEFILE themselves
b. All smelled of COMPROMISE
c. And that was NOT going to happen
4. So they take a stand
a. For God and His Word
5. Notice they do NOT make a big production
a. And protest that their “Christian rights”
b. Have been unconstitutionally violated
6. They simply and RESPECTFULLY ask permission
a. To abstain from the offered food and wine
7. Kids especially face these same compromising situations today
a. To be like everybody else
b. Pressure to engage in pre-marital sex
c. Pressure to drink and take drugs
d. Pressure to buy into the message of the world‘s music
8. Do you REFUSE to compromise
a. Or are you LEADING the way
b. To be accepted by the WORLD
9. We are ALL going to have
a. To endure some PAIN
b. To live in our ungodly society
10. But do you draw the line
a. At willful disobedience to God‘s Word
11. Or do you hold to the maxim
a. “When in Babylon,
b. Do as the Babylonians do”
12. I want to be like Daniel
a. And set my heart as stone
b. In opposition to compromise
