In this particular passage God has given the Nebuchadnezar the king of Babylon a dream that Daniel is interpreting to the king (Daniel 2:26-28). The king dreamt of a great statue that stood before him (Daniel 2:31) which had different sections of the body segmented in different metals. Those different metals were symbols for a succession of kingdoms starting from the head of gold that symbolizes Babylon (Daniel 2:37-38) to the last “earthly” kingdom of the toes comprised of part iron and clay (Daniel 2:33). During the time of the iron and clay feet a stone that was not a man made kingdom “cut out without hands” shatter the feet (Daniel 2:34) and all other man made kingdoms after that act (Daniel 2:35).
This stone is a symbol of the blessed hope that if Christ the corner stone (Deuteronomy 32:3-4, 2nd Samuel 22:32, Psalm 18:2 & 78:35, Matthew 16:13-18 & 21:42-44, Romans 9:33, 1st Corinthians 10:1-4) of the new kingdom has gone to his father then he will come back and get his people that where he is they might be also(John 14:1-4). And that kingdom will not ever be destroyed (Revelation 21:1,4, Daniel 7:27, John 18:36, 2nd Peter 1:11), but is the kingdom to leave all other previous kingdoms consumed in fire by the brightness of his coming (2nd Peter 3:10-13, Malachi 4:1, Luke 3:16-17).
Tyron: You asked: What is meant by the phrase … “and the kingdom shall not be left to other or ‘another’ people.” in Daniel 2:44?
It means the KINGDOM OF GOD which was originally given to the chosen people, howbeit imperfectly their forefathers lived and died within it, would not be given up or abandoned to the GENTILES.
The chosen people(Israel) were composed of 12 tribes of which only one tribe today is superficially apparent while the 11 are submerge and seems to have been lost with their identities hidden. The one tribe apparent is THE TRIBE OF JUDAH from which our Savior Jesus Christ came. He said Salvation is of the Jews. And Jesus a Jew is the King of Kings of that Kingdom and His citizens or would be citizens in the future are either CONVERTED Israelites or CONVERTED GENTILES. Gentiles are just GRAFTS into that commonwealth of the Kingdom but still precious in the eyes of God:
What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks . . . I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! . . . For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? (Romans 11:7-24)
