1. There are TWO potential meanings to this verse
a. So we will look at BOTH
2. #1: This may refer to hypocrites
a. Who faithfully attended church
b. Yet committed evil as a way of life
3. They did NOT live up
a. To their implied profession as believers
b. And are quickly FORGOTTEN after their deaths
c. For they had no testimony worth remembering
d. Their reputation only further rotting with time
4. This is such an UNNECESSARY waste
a. As they could have trusted in Jesus
b. Serving Him joyfully and zealously
c. Receiving a blessed testimony
d. From BOTH God and man
e. And in death FONDLY remembered
5. #2: In some of the Hebrew texts
a. The word “FORGOTTEN”
b. Is translated as “PRAISED”
6. If that IS the case
a. Then Solomon is saying
b. It is BEYOND comprehension
c. Why the wicked are PRAISED
d. After they die in the very city
e. Where they practiced their sinful lives
7. We will honor the wicked
a. And treat them as a SAINT
8. I know we cannot judge
a. The eternal destiny of another
9. But I think it is absolutely RIDICULOUS
a. To EULOGIZE a self-confessed
b. Christ-rejecting, Bible-bashing
c. Sin-embracing wicked individual
d. With a full-blown church funeral
e. Lauding them as members of the church
f. Calling them a “child of God”
g. Safely in heaven right now
h. When everybody knows
i. They had NO love for Jesus at all
j. And are MOST likely in hell
k. Cursing the very name of God
