See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

#108: Not to travel on Shabbat outside the limits of one’s place of residence (Ex. 16:29)

While reading though the story, one almost trips over this command. It is considered applicable, but I personally think that’s debatable given the context: During the wilderness journey the people were told not to gather manna on the 7th day. The point of the command being that it would be a wasted effort to go out looking for manna since there wouldn’t be any. By the way in Genesis 2:2-3 God blessed and sanctified the 7th day, but this chapter in Exodus is the first time we see an example of what to do (or not do) to remember that fact.
In ancient times, one might have to do some planning in order to ensure that he got to the tabernacle/temple before he had to rest. It is my understanding there is still, in modern times, a set distance that people are allowed to travel on the Sabbath. If one happened to travel a great distance just prior to Shabbat, then the stop is considered a temporary home.
This particular verse probably should not be used to justify action/inaction, but it’s a good thing to honor the Sabbath.
