When Paul wrote this letter, the Galatian churches (mostly those in southern Galatia) were being infiltrated by people who were trying to mislead them away from the Gospel of Christ. Paul starts off Galatians by introducing himself in a manner that answers one of the issues raised by those false teachers - that Paul wasn’t truly an apostle. So right at the outset, he gives a taste of his pedigree, “not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ…”. This letter will continue on this vein, spending nearly two chapters proving his authenticity.

Paul asserts his authority as a genuine Apostle. Paul makes it clear that he is not a bogus or fake Apostle “of men,” but of Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead. In reality, the source of all spiritual gifts is never “of men.” “Men” cannot grant or pass any spiritual gift to another. Thus, no Pope can make a valid claim to have received a spiritual gift from any Apostle. Apostles are but mere men.
