According to Genesis God created heaven twice:
    1. God created heaven in the beginning (verse 1)
    2. God created heaven again in the second day:
    a) He created the firmament (verse 6)
    b) This firmament had water below it and water above it (verse 7)
    c) He called this firmament heaven (verse 8)

“And God called the firmament Heaven”
God created and formed the Heavens in descending order. Theologians refer to the Heavens in ascending order relative to height towards God‘s throne. The third Heaven ( a.k.a. God’s abode, a.k.a. the Kingdom of God, a.k.a. the Kingdom of Heaven, a.k.a., the Heaven of Heavens, a.k.a. My Father’s House, and also known as many other names), was created and formed prior to Genesis 1:1. In fact, angelic beings sang together and shouted for Joy when God created the Heaven and the Earth in Genesis 1:1 (Job 38:4-7).

By naming this firmament, or vast and spacious sky, “Heaven,” God created and formed three Heavens: the first Heaven, being the vast and spacious sky; the second Heaven, being that which extends beyond the farthest stars and borders the Kingdom of God; and, the third Heaven, being the Kingdom of God.

“And the evening and the morning were the second day”
God counted the second complete daily cycle of ‘evening’ and ‘morning’ for mankind as day two.

All I need is the air that I breathe:
In my commentary on verse 4 is the point that the chapter and verse numbers were added to the original text. I decided to combine verses 6-8 for this post because they flow well together.
“And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”
Verse 7 seems to be redundant of verse 6. Compare the creation of Heaven to the creation of Light: When God said “let there be light”, there was light. When God said “Let there be a firmament”, He then proceeds to make the firmament. Also, it is interesting that the firmament is not declared good at this point.
The firmament was called Heaven, but it is the heaven of the sky. The waters below the sky are probably the seas at this point. I say this because birds and fish are created on day 5 which corresponds to day 2. That is similar to why I also think that space was separated from matter on day 1 – because the stars of day 4 correspond. So, the water below is sea and the water above is the upper atmosphere and on into space.
