Commandment #17 of 613: To circumcise the male offspring (Gen. 17:12; Lev. 12:3)(Ref. http://www.jewfaq.org/613.htm)
First impression: Ouch!
Other impressions: It is interesting that this sign is private. No one would know by this sign alone if one worshiped God or not.
A covenant usually requires two parts. Abraham’s part required circumcision, while God’s part included blessing him with descendants and land. One view is that God will remain faithful with His part even when the generations break the covenant.
This command becomes the subject of debate during the Jerusalem counsel in Acts 15. The counsel seems to have concluded that Gentiles did not need to get circumcised, but there is some debate regarding that point: Some argue that Gentiles did eventually get circumcised after they learned more of Torah. In any case, most Christians hold the view that Gentiles need not follow the same laws as Jews. This is ironic, considering most modern Gentile Christian parents choose to allow circumcision for a male baby.
