Hebrews 10: 14 Commentary

1)The different kinds of Levitical sacrifices which were offered repeatedly were not adequate enough to provide complete atonement for sins.
Heb.7:19.”For the law made nothing perfect.” Gal.2:16.” for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Acts.13:39 “..ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” Rom.3:20 “Therefore by the deed of the law,there shall no flesh be justified in his sight….” Heb.9:9. “…in which were offered both gifts & sacrifices that could not make him that did the sacrifice perfect,as pertaining to the conscience.” Heb.10:1 “For by the law…can never with those sacrifices make the comers there into perfect.”
2) “after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever.”Heb.10:12.The one sacrifice of Jesus Christ is efficacious in effecting complete atonement for sins.The Levitical sacrifices only foreshadow the perfect & ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
3)”So Christ was offered to bear the sins of many.”Heb.9:28. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body.” 1 Pet.2:24. John the Baptist said,”Behold the Lamb of God,which taketh away the sin of the world.” Read John 1:29,36.But the blood of bulls & sins could not take away sins.Read Heb.10:4.Jesus died on the Cross in our place for our sins.He took the penalty of death on himself.His death for our sins (as substitution) appeased the wrath of God as he has fulfilled the just requirements of the law.Because the shedding of His blood,the remission of sins was made possible.Lev.17:11;Heb.9:22.
4)Levitical sacrifices could provide only external & ceremonial cleansing.
Heb.9:13.The one offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all provides inner cleansing-cleansing of the conscience.Heb.9:14;10:10.The one sacrifice of Jesus Christ has obtained eternal redemption.Heb.9:12.
