2 Bible Commentaries on Hebrews 10: 18
1)Conclusion:In the closing verses of Hebrews 4,Jesus Christ is presented as our Great High Priest. In Heb.5:2-10,the concept of the high priest & the fulfillment of the qualifications of the high priest by Jesus Christ are explained. In Heb.7,it is established that the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ is of higher order than the Levitical priesthood. Then in the most important doctrinal section of Heb.8:1-10:18,the superiority of the high priestly ministry of Jesus Christ is explained comparing & contrasting with that of the Levitical priests. The two covenants are compared & contrasted & the salient features of the new covenant are highlighted. In Heb.10:18,the concluding statement for this section is made.
2)Character of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ:Under the Old Covenant, the Levitical priests offered repeatedly the same sacrifices which cannot take sins away.Heb.10:11.It is not possible for the blood of bulls & goats to take away sins.Heb.10:4.The sacrifices under the law could provide only ceremonial cleansing.Heb.9:13.They foreshadow the sacrifice to be offered by Jesus Christ. He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.Read Heb.9:14.He is the mediator of the new covenant.Through His death He brings deliverance from the penalty of sins to men.Eternal inheritance will be provided to those who believe in Him.Heb.9:15.Jesus Christ died once for all & offered Himself as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people.Read Heb.7:27;9:28.

3)Nature of forgiveness:The forgiveness provided by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is total & complete. It is irrevocable.”And their sins & iniquities will I remember no more.”(Heb.10;17).As the purpose of the sacrifice has been achieved through the blood of Jesus Christ(remission of sins),there is no need of any more sacrifices.Read Lev.17:11;Heb.9:22.
4)New Covenant is final:The New Covenant inaugurated by the blood of Jesus Christ is eternal.Zech.9:11;Matt.26:28;Heb13:20.No improvement or modification or amendment is needed. The defect of the lack of finality of sacrifice in the Old Covenant is rectified in the new covenant. The atonement work has been completed by Jesus Christ as high priest & He sat down on the right hand of God making intercession for us.Heb.10:12;Rom.8:34.
The Old Covenant is superseded by the New Covenant as prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah(31:31-34).The blessings of the New Covenant promised have become reality as the prophecies of Jeremiah have been fulfilled in Christ.
