By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

One Bible Commentary on Hebrews 11: 4

1

Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Cain must have had faith in God’s existence, since he spoke with him. But when it is said that he did not offer by faith, it means that his offering was self-chosen or will-worship, in that he did not offer according to the word of God. If you just make up a religion or practice for yourself and do it, rather than find your practice in God’s word and do as God says, then that practice is not by faith because faith comes by hearing God’s word. Cain then, leaving God’s word which he had commanded, designed his own offering. Abel offered animal sacrifices as God commanded, but Cain chose to offer vegetables rather than follow God’s word.
