1)Dear J.W.Elder,
Thank you for your interaction. It is interesting that you have connected John 3:16 with Hebrews 8:1.
2)In John 3:16,Jesus is the SON OF GOD.
3)In Hebrews 8:1,Jesus is the High Priest.
4)Interestingly,in Hebrews 4:14,we find,”…we have a GREAT High Priest,
that is passed into the heavens,Jesus, the SON OF GOD”.
5)In Heb.10:12,we find,”..this MAN after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.”Jesus Christ, the Son of God,has to come as man to offer Himself as sacrifice for our sins as a High Priest.

1)In 1 Tim.3:16,we read,”And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.Read Phil.2:6-8.
2)The Prophet Isaiah has prophesied,”Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign,Behold,a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel.”Isaiah 7:14.Read Mic.5:2;Matt.1:23,24.
3)The name “Jesus” signifies the humanity.Read Matt.1:21;Luke 1:31.”This is Saviour”
4)Messiah is the Hebrew name for “Christ”. “Christos”(Kristos) is the equivalent Greek word meaning “Anointed one”.Jesus Christ has fulfilled the roles of Priest,Prophet & King. The original readers of the Epistle of Hebrews were well versed with the O.T. quotations. The writer has used Psalm 110:1&4 along with many other O.T. quotation & allusions to prove the superiority of Jesus Christ in His Person & in His Work.
5)The angel told Mary,”The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee;therefore the holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35.

Ps. 110:1 describes the Messiah as David’s lord. The Hebrew adoni, not adonai, (Lord God) is always a designation of non-Deity. The Hebrew word adoni occurs 195 times in the Hebrew Bible and refers in each case to a human, occasionallhy angelic superior. Adoni never designates God. Therefore this key verse, cited and alluded to 23 times in the NT defines the Messiah not as God, but as a supremely elevated human person, the “man Messiah Jesus” (I Tim 2;5).

By committing adultery,David had violated the 7th & 10th Commandments of the Law.By murdering Uriah & others,he had violated the 6th Commandment.
Commandments 5 to 10 pertain to the relationships with fellowmen.David has sinned against both God & others.Note David’s confession in 2 Sam.11:13.
David actually made attempts earlier to cover his sin.2 Sam.11:5-13.He was responsible for the killing of some other soldiers also.2 Sam 11:17,24.Joab was loyal to David in doing what David wished. But David was the real culprit.
When Nathan, the prophet of God rebuked of David’s sins,David realized the seriousness & consequences of the terrible sins committed by him.Because of this incident,David has given great occasion to the enemies of the lord to blaspheme.See God’s verdict for David’s sins in 2 Sam 12:11-14.God had punished David for his sin.See 2 Sam.16:21-23.But as David had truly repented of his sin.God had forgiven him also. The Psalm 51 is linked to this incident. Please read commentary 1 for psalm 51:8 in this site.
Christine, please go through the commentaries 2& 3 for Heb.9:26 to read about the entrance, nature & consequences of sin.God bless you.

Note:Correction in Commentary 2:Last quotations should be Heb.7:25&Rom.8:34.
1)From the opening verses of in Hebrews,it can be inferred that Jesus has fulfilled the roles of prophet,Priest &King.(i)God has spoken to the fathers by the Prophets. He has now spoken by His Son.Heb.1:1,2.Read Deut.18:15-19.
(ii)The clause “when he had purged our sins” in v 3 signifies the High Priestly work of Christ.(iii)The expression “sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high”signifies the royalty of Christ.
2)The writer says that Jesus is better than the Prophets & the Angels as Son of God in Ch.1.In Ch.2,He is better than Angels as Son Of Man.Heb.2:17.
“Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like him unto his brethren that he might be a merciful & faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.” In
order to perform the high priestly work Jesus has to come as Man as man only can represent human race before God.The incarnation & death of Christ were required for the accomplishment of atonement for sin.
3)In Heb.2:17-3:6,Jesus is presented as faithful high priest.Read Heb.3:1,2.
“who was faithful to him that appointed him.”
4)In Heb.4:14-5:10,He is presented as a Merciful High Priest.Read Heb.4:15,
16.Qualifications,conditions &functions of the high priest are discussed.
5)”We have a high priest that is passed into the heavens.”Heb.4:14.”ascended up far above all heavens.”Eph.4:10.Aaronic high priests passed into the Most Holy Place once a year to perform the atonement work.Jesus has passed into the heavens to complete the atonement work.
6)In Heb.7,the eternal Priesthood of Jesus Christ is compared & contrasted with the Levitical Priesthood taking Ps.110:4 as the key verse for discussion.
7)Read Heb.7:26.”made higher than the heavens”.Eph.1:20.”when he raised him from the dead & set him at his own right hand in heavenly places.”Col.3:1
“where Christ sitteth on the right of God.”Because of sinlessness & His ascension,He is better than the Aaronic priests. He rose again & sat down on the right hand of God to continue the high priestly ministry by making intercession for us after the atonement work is completed.Heb.7:25;Rom.8:34.
8)In Heb.8:1-10:18,the distinctive features of the New Covenant are explained with Jer.31:31-34 as key text& the high priestly work of Jesus Christ is highlighted taking into consideration of the Day of Atonement ritual & some passages from Exodus,Leviticus & Numbers & Psalm 40.

The writer of Hebrews makes use of Psalm 110 to impress two important points.(i)The exaltation of Christ (ii) eternal Priesthood of Christ.
In N.T.,the title of high priest is applied to Christ only in the Epistle of Hebrews.Heb.2:17;3:1;4:14,15;5:5,10;6:20;7:26;8:1&9:11.The priesthood of Christ is an important topic in Heb.4:14-10:18.
Jesus Christ has superseded the Levitical priesthood by becoming a high priest after the order of Melchisedec.Heb.5:6,10;6:20;7:17,21.Jesus Christ is both priest & king as Melchisedec.(Heb.7:1,2)
The writer of Hebrews cited or alluded Ps.110:1 in Heb.8:1 to show the exalted position of Christ.Read Heb.1:3,13.In Heb.1:13,he quoted Ps.110:1,to prove that Jesus Christ is better than angels.
Heb.10:12.(NKJV)”But this Man after He had offered one sacrifice for the sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.” Heb.12:2″…has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”
Jesus Christ has completed the atonement work for sins.It is efficacious. He died on the cross, rose again, entered into the heaven & sat down at the right hand of God.The Levitical priests had no chairs for them to sit in the tabernacle after offering the sacrifices.Their atoning work was incomplete.
Heb.10:11
After Peter quoted Ps.110:1 in his first preaching after resurrection of Jesus to show that Jesus is both Lord & Christ.Acts 2:34,35.
Jesus is both man & God.He is the Son of David as well as the Lord of David.(See Matt.22:41-46;Mark 12:35-37;Luke 20:41-44.
Jesus Christ is both ruler & minister. He is seated with all majesty, honour,
glory & power.(Jude 25).He ministers in heaven as our high priest making intercession for us.Heb.7:25;8:34.

1)The important theme of Hebrews is the superiority of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews shows that the priesthood Christ is better than the Levitical priesthood.Heb.7:11
2)The first reference of Jesus as high priest is in Heb.2:17.Priests represented people before God.The high priest being taken among men knew the weaknesses of the people.Jesus Christ, who came as man,was tempted in all points ,as we are,yet without sin.Heb.4:15
3)The high priest had to offer for himself because of his infirmity.Heb.5:3;
7:27.Jesus Christ is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners & made higher than heavens. There is no no necessity to offer any sacrifice for His own sin.Heb.7:26,27.
4)The high priest was called of God.Ex.28:1Heb.5:4.Jesus Christ was designated as high priest by God.Ps.2:7;Heb.5:5,6.
5)The Levites had the right to receive the office of priesthood.Heb.7:5.
Jesus Christ was of the tribe of Judah.Matt.1:3,16;Heb.7:14;Rev.5:5.He became high priest after the order of Melchisedec.Ps.110:4;Heb.5:6.
6)The Levitical priests were made without an oath.Jesus was made high priest with an oath.Heb7:21.
7)The Law made men high priests who had infirmity but the Word of oath made the Son who is consecrated evermore as high priest.Heb.7:28.
8)Many high priests officiated under the law one after another.Because of death,a high priest could not serve continually. But Jesus Christ has an unchangeable priesthood as He will not die anymore.Heb.7;23,24
9)The Levitical priests offered animal sacrifices.Heb.9:12.Jesus Christ offered Himself once for all for the sins of all men.Heb.7:27;Rom.6:10
10)Jesus Christ sat on the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven.Heb.10:1,2.This expression is taken from Ps.110:1.Read Ps.45:6;
Heb.1:3,13;8:1;10:12;12:2.Matt.22:44;Mark 12:35-37;14:61-62;Luke 20:42;Acts 2:34;Rom.8:34;1 Cor.15:25;Eph.1:20.
Jesus Christ has the power & majesty& authority..Read Philip.2:9
Matt.28:18.All power is given unto me in heaven and earth.
1 Pet.3:22.Who(Jesus)is gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God;angels and authorities and power being made subject to him.
