Not a renewal of the Old Covenant as some “Messianic Jews” and other modern Judaizers teach, but a truly New Covenant, one very different from the one given at Sinai.

1)The writer of Hebrews spoke about the “first covenant” & the “second covenant” in Heb.8:7.He referred to the Mosaic Covenant as the “first covenant” & the “New Covenant”to be inaugurated by Jesus Christ as the “second covenant”.
2)There were some important covenants made with the individuals by God before the Mosaic Covenant.(i)Edenic Covenant.Gen.1:28-2:8-17.(ii)Adamic Covenant.Gen.2:14-19.(iii)Noahic covenant. Gen.8:20-9:29.(iv)Abrahamic Covenant. Gen 12:1-4;13:14-17;15:1-7;17:1-8.
3)In Heb.8:9,the quotation of Jer.3:32 has been used.The old covenant was made with the people of Israel when they were delivered out of the land of Egypt.It was made at Sinai.
4)Jeremiah said “they brake my covenant” whereas the author of Hebrews said”they continued not in my covenant”.The necessity of the New Covenant was because of the failure of the people not keeping it.
5)The writer of Hebrews used Jeremiah’s quotation to stress the fact that the second covenant would not be an amendment or modification of the first covenant but that it would be a brand new one.
6)The writer of Hebrews took the quotation from the Greek Septuagint & not from the Hebrew text.There were some verbal changes but the meaning has not been changed.
6)The writer of Hebrews used the expression “I regarded them not” instead of “although I was an husband to them” in Jeremiah.Obedience was the key of the Old Covenant.Ex.24:3,7.The people of Israel became unfaithful to God.
Jer.3:2;Hos.2:13.God had withdrawn His hand of protection from them & rejected them because of their disobedience.
7)The people of northern kingdom (Israel)were taken captives by the Assyrians in 622 B.C.The people of Judah(southern kingdom)were taken captives by the Babylonians in 605 B.C. & 597 B.C.After these prophecies of Jeremiah,the people of Judah were again captives in 587 B.C.& the Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed.
