2 Bible Commentaries on Job 1: 1
We have in Lamenations 4:21 the reference to the land of UZ where lived the people of Edom. So we can safely say that Job was from the land of Edom, the settlement of the tribes of Esau.Edom with its Mount Seir is the land given to Esau whose another name is Edom (Genesis 36:19,43)
Job 1:2 says that Job was a great man in the land of the east. Edom was on the east side of the river Jordan the eastern border of the promised land of Cannan. There is a reference to the raid of the Chaldeans who were residing east of Edom. The names similar to Eliphaz and Teman also appear in the list of decendants of Esau as given in Genesis 36especially vv.11,12,15. There were many wise men like Balaam,Dorda etc from the land of East(1 Kg. 4:30-31,Numbers 22)We also see the friends of Job in the role of wisemen. There is a reference to Sheba in the south in Job 1:15.Since all these are from the regions of the decendents of Abraham, they seem to have known the God of Abraham as well. Thus the setting of the story is the land of Uz, which is the land of Edom
