One Bible Commentary on Job 42: 5

1

With all his abilities Job and even his friends had no knowledge of why Job had to bear all the sufferings.Job was certainly not a sinless person, but there were people out and out against God. If they did not suffer, why Job should suffer and that too with such great sufferings! He therefore wanted to know the reason for his sufferings.

God’s ways are past finding out and He is under no obligation to anybody to tell why He is working the way He does. Man as His creature should not enter into arguments and even if one does one cannot prevail. Job knew that and declared it: “If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.” (Job 9:3)And so did it happen.God did not answer any of the questions Job had, but instead challenged him to answer a series of questions in chapter 38 to 41.Job had no answers to any of the questions God asked him and that led Job to acknowledge the soverignity of the ominscient and omnipotent God. (Job 42:1-2)He abhored himself. What did Job benefit out of all this? Well, ealier he had only heard about God, but now he had a personal encounter with God.(Job 42:5) Whatever else may be our needs, out basic and inevitable need is God Himslf. If we have Him, we have no need to raise any question. He is the answer to all our questions. We can safely rest in His everlasting arms!If we know God, we will have no interest in answers to any of our questions.
