Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

1. Some facts on Sychar (Barnes – www.studylight.org)
a. Joshua assembled the people before his death
i. And here Israel renewed their covenant with the Lord (Josh 24)
b. When Gideon died, it became a place of idolatrous worship
i. The people worshiping Baal-berith (Judges 9:46)
c. It was destroyed by Abimelech and sowed with salt (Judges 9:45)
i. But was rebuilt and became the residence
ii. Of Jeroboam, the King of Israel (1 Ki 12:25)
d. It was called by the Romans “Flavia Neapolis”
i. Corrupted by the Arabs into “Nablus”
2. Jacob bought one piece of ground
a. Near Shalem, a city of Shechem
b. For 100 pieces of silver (Gen 33:19)
3. Jacob also gave Joseph an additional piece of ground
a. Which he took from the hand
b. Of the Arnorite by his own valor
c. “With his sword and his bow,”
d. As a portion above that which was given to his brethren (Gen 48:22)
4. The bones of Joseph were buried there
a. When brought up from Egypt (Joshua 24:32)
