And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

One Bible Commentary on John 8: 3
1

in the passages of John chapter 8 are recorded the only time in the life of Christ that He ever wrote something. all sorts of speculations exist as to what the Lord wrote on the ground on that occasion…

according to the context of John chapter 8, the charge of adultery was brought against a woman by the Pharisees as a means to tempt Christ… for ” They said this, tempting Him so that they might have reason to accuse Him. ”

immediately following their statement, ” Jesus wrote on the ground with His finger, not appearing to hear. ”

what could the Lord have written on the ground ?

what the Lord could have been writing on the ground was the Commandment ” You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor. ” Ex. 20:16

the Pharisees brought only the woman to Jesus, letting go the man, and tempted Him to adjudicate the case which was contrary to the Law for Him to do. Deut. 19:16-19

they showed bias in their accusations by admitting the woman was caught in the act but failed to bring to justice the man with whom she had adultery. and they brought their case to the wrong Judge hoping to condemn Jesus for usurping the Law of God given to Moses.

the Law called for these Pharisees, these accusers of the woman, to be put to death as well. ( Deut. 19:16-19 ) since these Pharisees brought a false report being they were malicious witnesses…

“You shall not bear a false report; do not join your hand with a wicked man to be a malicious witness. ” Ex. 23:1

a false witness is listed among the seven things that are hateful to God. ( Pv. 6:16-19 ) could it be that the man the Pharisees failed to accuse was as a close friend of theirs ? maybe one of their own ? did they take a bribe ? ( Pv. 17:23 ) no struggle was reported concerning the man. do we suppose he was an enemy of the Pharisees ? he wouldn’t have gotten away if he was their enemy… he was let go for some diabolical reason.

whatever that part of the case may be, the Pharisees brought false witness against their neighbor showing bias judgement in bringing only the woman before Christ.
