This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

I found that Lightfoot had an interesting perspective on that passage and related it to Numbers 5

The New RSV has a footnote on the passage:” Other ancient authorities add, the sins of each of them”
Jesus was writing on the ground, but the accusers kept on asking him if the woman be stoned according to the law of Moses. So Jesus straighened up and challenged the accusers with question, “He that is without sin cast first stone on the woman.” Jesus bent and again started writing. It is by reading the writing that the accusers all left, not all at a time, but one by one, begining from the elders. So what Jesus wrote could be their sins.
In the Bible we have the example of writing on the wall (Danile 5;5,6, 24-29)Jermiah 17:1 speaks about writing the sins of Judah with an iron pen, engraved with a diamond point on their hearts and altars. Rev. 20 has the book opened to judge the revived dead.
Jesus wrote on the ground, on the dust of the earth so to say, that can be easily rubbed out. He came not to judge, but to save. Although Jesus was sinless and to cast first stone on the woman, He didn’t condemned her, and the accusers could have found grace like that woman.

Yes, I also read the commentary by Lightfoot. It seems there is indeed some relevance of John 8:6 to Numbers 5 ad in that Lightfoot seems to have right foot on the passage. For our Lord Jesus had come to fulfill the law.
