And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

One Bible Commentary on Luke 16: 9

This is an interesting passage of Scripture, and a hard one might I add, if you’re new to this passage. At a glance, it doesn’t seem to make much sense, but when you understand this verse, then you’ll see that it is extremely sensible

The LORD Jesus Christ transfered the principle illustrated by the parable of the unjust steward to us, the point of this verse is that we need to use our present resources to plan ahead for eternity.

The term “mammmon of unrighteousness” means worldly or material wealth, it is riches, or money.

The term, “that, when ye fail”, is synonymous to saying, “that, when you die”.

Money can no longer support a person after they die. Even though money will fail us when we die, those whom we have led to salvation will not die (experience everlasting destruction and separation from God). They will welcome us into eternal habitations or dwellings.

Though Jesus was speaking to His disciples, it definitely applies to all believers.
The disciples should wisely apply their money to make friends who would welcome them into heaven when they died.

In other words, disciples should apply their money to bring others to faith in Christ Jesus the LORD and so secure a warm reception into heaven.
Money is wisely applied when it is invested in soul winning, and in the Lord’s work.

Our Lord said that we should lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven so that when we “fail” or come to the end of life, we will be welcomed into heaven.
we should lay up for ourselves treasures in Heaven, by using what we have to serve the Lord now.
