Jesus was being taken to be crucified. A huge crowd followed Him and , as stated in previous verse, there were women who were wailing and lamenting for Jesus for the pain he was going to suffer and that He would die on the cross. This they did out of their love for Him. Jesus had already suffered a lot the previous night and was going to suffer on the cross. But he knew that he was fulfilling a mission for the salvation of many in the fulfillment of the will of His Father.Again, he knew that he would rise again on the third day and will be exalted there after to the right hand of the Most High. But as for the Jewish people they would have to suffer a lot for rejecting the Messiah and that the judgement would come upon the whole nation. In fact, Jesus had earlier wept for Jerusalem, that is for the Jewish nation (Luke 19:41-44;Matt.23:35-39). So Jesus told the women of Jerusalem to weep for the impending judgement on the nation! Weeping here may be to show the repentance, or grief for the loss the nation would suffer or for seeking the favor or mercy of God on behalf of the Jewish nation. In 70 A.D. Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans, the temple too wad destroyed and the people were scattered all over the world. Jesus was telling the women to have concern for their nation with this impending judgment that was to take place.
