2 Bible Commentaries on Luke 5: 14
1)In Luke 5:12,we read that the man was full of leprosy.The next verse says that the leprosy departed from him.He was totally made clean.
2)Jesus asked him to show himself to the priest who had to pronounce him clean after a cleansing ceremony as per Mosaic law.Read Lev.14:1-7.
3)The priest would go out of the camp(cf.Heb.13:12).After his inspection,
one living clean bird would be killed in an earthern vessel over running water.He would take another clean bird along with cedar wood,scarlet &
hyssop & dip in the blood & sprinkle it 7 tomes on the leper to be cleansed.The living bird would be let loose into the field.The priest would pronounce him clean.It denotes “justification”.Rom.3:24-30.
4)The bird which was killed represents the death of Christ for our sins & the living bird represents the resurrection of Christ.The ceremony foreshadows the atoning sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for our sins.
The cedar wood represents the cross.Num.19:6;Matt 27:35;Mark 5:25;Luke 23:33;John 19:18;1 Pet.2:24.
The scarlet represents the blood of Christ.Num.19:6.Matt.27:28;Mark.15:17;
John 19:2-5;Heb.9:19

1) Please refer the previous commentary.There is one correction.The last quotation should be Rom.3:24-30.
2)”Shew thyself to the priest & offer for thy cleansing” Mark 1:44;Luke 5:14.The priest could not cure the leprosy.He could only inspect & declare that a leper had been cleansed.”The heart is deceitful above all things & desperatelywicked: who can know it?”Jer.17:9.Only God can change our hearts.Ezek.36:26.The blood of Jesus Christ produces inner cleansing.
Heb.9:14;Eph.1:7;1 John1:7.
3)The clean bird was killed outside the camp.Jesus died on the cross at Golgotha (Matt.27:33)& shed His precious for our sins.”Without shedding of blood,there is no remission”Heb.9:22.Read Lev.17:11;1 Pet.1:19.
4)Because of uncleanness,the cleansed leper could not go into the camp & worship God before.Read Eph.2:12;4:17-19.Because of sin,an unsaved person was alienated from God.
5)After the ceremony of sprinkling the blood of the bird 7 times on the cleansed leper,the priest would declare him clean & he was allowed to enter into the camp after shaving & washing.Lev.14:9,10.We are justified through faith in his blood.Read Rom.3:24,25.Justification is change of status from being guilty to not being guilty.
6)The shaving of hairs, washing of clothes & body signify new birth.”Except a man be born again ,he cannot see the kingdom of God….Except a man be born of water & spirit,he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”John 3:3,5.
7)On the eighth day,the cleansed leper was allowed to offer the sacrifices commanded by the law after shaving & washing.These sacrifices he could not offer before because of uncleanness.As per the law the male child would be circumcised on the 8th day.Therefore the leper would have a new beginning after that 8th day.Read Rom.6:11-14;Eph.4:22-24.
