EL YH [LORD God], not ELYH [Elijah]. It was the scribes who said Elijah would come” Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come? (Mt 17:10)

The great and dreadful day of the Lord refers to Christ’s second coming. Great for the righteous and dreadful for the wicked.
Some unknown amount of time before the second coming, Elijah will be sent.
The Jews today still have a feast where they leave a place for Elijah in anticipation of his coming.
The next verse tells us what he will do when he is sent.
