40 is one of the holy numbers of Judaism and other religions. 40 days was the period of cleansing for a woman after giving birth (twice that for a female child). The great flood lasted 40 days. Moses fasted 40 days before receiving the commandments. The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God. Muhammad was forty years old when he first received the revelation and the Quran says that a person is only fully grown when they reach the age of 40. And many other examples.
