In this passage it seems that the family and close friends of Jesus who either came or lived in Capernaum thought he was “a bit mad” and wanted to restrain him. This is evidenced from the immediate words of Jesus about tying up the strong man (v25, 31) Why did Jesus’ family feel this way? Having lived with Jesus for 30 years they did not understand who or what Jesus was destined to be, to do. Jesus had moved to Capernaum following a miracle in Cana of Galilee, and begun his amazing ministry of revelation. He had not chosen his own brothers to be among the top 12, or begun with miracles in Nazareth (See John 2:46). This peculiar attitude of his family was caused by three things: their anger because he did not begin in Nazareth; he did not choose them as his 12; and he was an embarrasment to them! Jesus had to continue his mission, so dealt hardly with these folk as he rightly will do with us if we deny his mission and ministry.
