And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.



One Bible Commentary on Mark 7: 31
1

1)Tyre & Sidon:During the early part of the ministry of Jesus,we find that the people from Tyre & Sidon heard about him & came to hear his message & to be healed of their diseases.Mark 3:8;Luke 6:17.
2)(a)Decapolis:The meaning of the Greek word is :Ten cities”.[deka=ten;polis=city].The ten cities were:(i)Sythopolis (ii)Hippus (iii)Gadara (iv)Pella (v) Philadelphia (vi)Dion (Adun) (vii)Canatha(kanawat) (viii)Damascus (ix)Raphana (Abila) & (x)Gerasa.
(b)(i)From Matthew’s Gospel,we find that people from Decapolis came to hear the message of Jesus & to be healed of their diseases.Matt.4:25.
(ii)After the man who was possessed with the devil & had the legion was delivered,he went to Decapolis & told the people how great things Jesus had done for him.Mark 5:20.
(iii)In Mark 7,after the healing of the daughter of the Gentile woman,Jesus departed from the coasts of Tyre & Sidon to the Sea of Galilee through the region of Decapolis.He did not take the route through Galilee.
3)The healing of the man who was dumb & had an impediment in speech(Mark 7:31-37)is one of the two miracles recorded only in Mark.The other one is the healing of the blind man recorded in Mark 8:22-26..
4)The action of Jesus Christ mentioned(Mark 7:33)were intended to develop the faith of the man who was to be healed.Ephphatha(Mark 7:34)is an Aramaic word.The man understood Aramaic.Mark interpreted the meaning for the sake of the readers.
5)Jesus told the people not to tell anybody about the miracle.Mark 7:36.

The people of Israel expected that Messiah would come & build a political kingdom for them.Jesus came to give his life as ransom for many.Matt.20:28;
Mark 10:45;Read Tit.2:14.
Jesus told his disciples for the first time in Mark 8:31 about his suffering,death & resurrection.
6)The people did not follow what Jesus told but published it to more people.Mark 7:36.Read Mark 1:45.
7)The people were very much astonished as they witnessed the miracle of healing of the deaf & dumb man.They said,”He hath done all things well.”
The healing was absolutely perfect.Read Deut.32:4;Eccl.3:11.
