1. Oaths were to be invoked in God’s name ONLY
a. You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name (Deut 10:20)
2. Abraham to his servant
a. I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live (Gen 24:3)
3. Paul in his epistles
a. Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying (Gal 1:20)
b. For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:8)
