1. This centurion had personally either heard Jesus
a. Or heard of Him from someone else
2. This man’s Greco-Roman gods were of no help
a. And it may have been humbling
b. To ask a Jew for help
3. But not all Roman soldiers were brutal overlords
a. And this centurion cared for his servant
4. Luke adds the Jewish leaders pleaded on the centurion’s behalf with Jesus
a. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.” (Luke 7:3-5 ESV)
5. Matthew condenses the story

6. Whereas Luke records the centurion
a. Sending Jewish elders to Jesus
b. On his behalf
7. This is known as the LAW of AGENCY
a. “In the view of the ancients, agency and representation was the same as being there. If the elders and friends were there representing the centurion, so then was the centurion.”
