Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,
2 Bible Commentaries on Philemon 1: 1
This verse is an unusual verse. First, Paul wrote this letter, while in prison. He starts off saying-Paul a Prisoner of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why? I believe it was to show us not to look at our natural circumstances. Yes, he was, probably, under House arrest in Rome(Acts 28),had certain liberties, especially in his sharing of the word, but he was a prisoner of Jesus Christ. He, in the spiritual, saw this as a higher calling.
How about you, friend? Are you a prisoner of the Lord Jesus Christ? I Corinthians 16:15 mentions the house of Stephanas, who have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints. We hear the word addict and we cringe. We look at it as a dirty word, but in I Cor 16:15, it is a positive word. They are addicted to the ministry or work of the saints. My friends, there is such a thing as being addicted to the church and part of the fruit of being a prisoner of the Lord is to become addicted. Get addicted to Jesus today and the Lord will give you a different outlook on life.

This was explained and I understood this to be that Paul was letting it be known that his imprisonment was allowed by God and God’s will because God was going to use him. He lead a slave to Christ and probably would have not have met him if not imprisoned. I understood it as this imprisonment was ordained by God. By saying Jesus allowed the imprisonment, it diminishes Rome’s power to imprison Paul without God’s approval.
