1. The phrase “my son” is used throughout Proverbs
a. As girls were not typically educated as such
b. To deal with the affairs of life
2. Girls were typically secluded and prepared
a. For marriage and motherhood
3. But note Jesus‘ attitude toward women learning
a. Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha,
Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)
4. Young children and students
a. Are exhorted to listen attentively
b. To heed the disciplinary
c. And corrective teaching of their dads
5. And to not push away
a. The kind teachings (torah) of their moms
6. It is very tempting especially when we become teenagers
a. To think of mom and dad
b. As “not with it” anymore
7. Young people experience a sharp increase in brain function
a. They are able to just now relate all previous data points
b. Into a formation of a worldview
c. Which often clashes with their parent‘s worldview
8. But they are told to still listen to their dads
a. And to not lightly dismiss
b. The words of their moms
