1. There is nothing wrong with planning ahead
a. So don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisers (Pro 24:6 NLT)
2. But the point here is prideful arrogance
a. Which ASSUMES the future
b. Will turn out EXACTLY
c. The way YOU think it will
3. Here is an example of such ASSUMING:
a. I will propose to Sally tomorrow at 6pm
i. And she WILL accept
b. We will get married in 3 months
i. And stay in Virginia for 2 years
ii. Then move to Florida
c. We will have 4 children
i. 2 boys and 2 girls
ii. All spaced 2 years apart
d. Our boys will go to college
i. And become doctors
e. They will marry at age 27
i. And also have 4 children each
f. Our girls will go to Bible college
i. And be married during their junior year
g. They will marry men studying for the pastorate
i. And also have 4 children each
h. I will retire at age 65
i. And die at age 95
4. We ought to plan but commit everything to the Lord
a. Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil (James 4:13-16)
