God was the king of the people of Israel. The Israelites however asked for a king in the manner the other nations around them had. God granted their request, although in that way the Israelites rejected God as their king. Saul the first king was rejected by God as he disobeyed God. David replaced him. Solomon, David’s son succeeded Him. Even then Solomon was said to have sat on the throne of the LORD! (1 Chronicle 29:23). For the kingdom of Israel was after all the kingdom of God. He was the ultimate king and the earthly kings were only His vicars.

In the Davidic covenant, David was promised “I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of they bowels, and I will establish his Kingdom……I will be his Father and he shall be my son.” (2 Samuel 7:12-14). David’s seed would be God’s son, as king! So we have here the Father-son relationship between the king of Israel and the Lord. It seems that this formula came to be used at the time of the coronation of the kings of Israel. This could well be the root of the Jewish tradition of addressing the king of Israel as God’s son and it speaks of the Father- Son relationship that is there between God and His Son as the Messiah, the anointed king.

1)1 Tim.3:16.”And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:God was manifest in the flesh,justified in the Spirit,seen of angels,preached unto the gentiles,believed on in the world,received up into glory.”
2)John 14:9.Jesus saith unto him,Have I been so long time with you,and yet hast thou not known me ,Philip?he that hath seen me hath seen the Father;
and how sayest thou then,Shew us the Father?
3)Col.1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God…”
4)Heb.1:3.”Who being the brightness of his glory,and the express image of his person…”
5)John 1:1″In the beginning was the Word,and the Word was with God,and the Word was God.”.John 1:14.”And the Word was made flesh,and dwelt among us,
(and we beheld his glory,the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)
full of grace and truth.
From the above passages,we see that Jesus Christ is God.He is Alpha and Omega,the beginning and the ending.He is the first and the last.Read Rev.1:8,11,17.He came as man.Phil.2:6,7.
6) In 2 Sam.7, God promised David a “house” and a kingdom that will last forever.The hope of a Messiah rests on this promise.The promise was fulfilled when Jesus came into the world.Luke 1:32,33.”He shall be great,and shall be called the Son of the Highest:and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever;and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
7)When a new king from the line of David was crowned as king,the formula “Thou art my Son;this day I have begotten thee” was announced in a solemn ceremony of coronation attended by priests and prophets.The new king was adopted by God as his “Son” and he would rule looking God as his Father.
In the New Testament,the Son of God is declared to be the Messiah,the King.
Matt.3:17;Acts 13:33;Heb.1:5/5:5

The phrase “the Son of God” should be understood in the way the Jews used to understand it.”Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:18) Jesus said to Jews. “I and my Father are one.” The Jews said to Jesus, “For a good work we stone thee not; but for blesphemy; and because thou, being man, makest thyself God.” (John 10;29-33) Thus for someone to call himself a Son of God meant that he is very God of God. We have phrases like son of belial, son of peace etc in the Bible. It means that the person has that quaility.A son of peace (Lk.10:6)means who seeks, love, keeps and makes peace! Thus the Son of God has all the qualities of God! What God is He is!

It is true that the coming messiah was to be the Son of God (Ps. 2:7)and that this was declared to be so in the case of Jesus in his resurrection. But he was the Son of God even before that. He was declared to be so by the
Father at the time of Jesus’s baptism. He was adrresed to be so even at the time of his birth.”And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him”(Hebrews 1:8 compared with Lk 2:13-14)He was the Son of God even before that. For Jesus said, “I came forth from the Father” (John 16:28); for Jesus prayed, “O Father, glorify thou with thine ownself with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” Yes, he is the eternal Son of God.This was the hope of the Jews that the coming Messiah would be the Son of God, as foretold in Ps.2. Little wonder that the High Priest had asked Jesus,”Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” (Mk.14:61)Even village folk had that hope. A woman like Martha said, “Yes Lord,I beleive that thou art the Christ, the Son of God,which should come into the world”(John 11:27)Even the gospel of John was written for this expressed purpose: that ye might beleive that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God; and beleiving ye might have life through his name.” (John 20:31)
