Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

One Bible Commentary on Psalms 51: 8
1

king David had sinned against as he had committed adultery and murder.Initially he tried to cover his sin.God sent the prophet Nathan to warn David about his sin and its consequences.David acknowledged his sin and asked the forgiveness of God.When we commit sin our fellowship with God is disturbed. Our relationship with others is also damaged. We lose the joy of salvation. We lose the inner peace.Even when we hear glad news it will not give us joy.As we have stain in the soul,we can not enjoy in this world.David wanted the joy of salvation to be restored. The joy of the lord is strength. When we commit sin, unless restoration is not made, even the Word of God will not give us joy.As we have not close fellowship with God,we cannot enjoy in His presence because of guilty conscience. Now David confesses his sin.He is broken in his heart. He comes to God with true repentance. He wants everything to be restored. He wants to get back the joy of salvation. He wants to get reconciled with God and with fellow people. He wants to have right attitude and right thinking. He wants to enjoy the presence of the Lord once again. He wants to enjoy listening to His Word again. So he asks God to make him hear joy &gladness. After brokenness of heart, there is rejoicing.
