Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

It is a citation of Proverbs 25:21-22 “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.”

I think the meaning of the coals of fire is that he will be upset that he can’t upset you. In other words, your enemies goal is to lower you to his level, and the thing that will upset him the most is not you calling him names, but you resisting being lowered to his level. And this could work out to his salvation, as he will see that he is so petty precisely because he does not know the Lord.

I would say that the result would only apply if your enemy knew he was wrong. This verse bothers me a bit, The motive behind the verse says what will happen if you do so. I don,t think we should be doing so for that reason!
